The monograph Architect Zoja Dumengjić presents the life and work
of a noted modernist architect of Russian ancestry who developed
her long and prolific professional career in Croatia. She graduated
from the Architectural Department of the Zagreb Technical Faculty in
1927, as the third female student, and the first female architect who
proved herself a successful practitioner, designer and builder. With
her 188 projects, 54 built works, 72 competitions and 20 first prizes,
she left significant trace in the Croatian architectural space. She designed
projects in various building typologies, but excelled precisely
in health facilities - hospitals, healthcare centers, medical centers,
and above all, specialized tuberculosis pavilions and sanatoriums.
In order to properly present this significant oeuvre, her work is discussed
in broader architectural context, Croatian and international,
tracing indicative influences, connections and inspirations, thereby
enticing further interpretations and analyses, which might contribute
to deeper understanding of the overall Croatian modernist architectural
scene.
