The design of energy-efficient buildings is mostly done routinely without using advanced approaches and contemporary methods that can ensure the implementation of a comprehensive energy and cost optimisation. Standardoptimisation results of such a typical design process are most commonly related to partial improvements of either individual elements or the system and they do not take the full account of possibilities that can be provided by a scientifically based holistic and interdisciplinary modelling. The proposed innovative concept refers to the verification of a new process that ensures advanced energy and cost optimisation during architectural and energy design of buildings. This process is based on a complex dynamic building modelling and the consequent holistic optimisation of energy efficiency design. It is assumed that optimisation can considerably reduce investment costs and thereby generate interest of investors.

The verification of the new process includes an analysis of possible cost-efficiency arising from the adoption of the holistic optimisation approach, an analysis of potential implementation costs of the new process and the possible market responses to the new concept in terms of its performance goals and price. The verification is performed on selected projects which include newly built structures and old buildings undergoing comprehensive energy efficiency refurbishment. A comparison between the designs of the selected buildings and the results gained through the application of the new process can help determine a possible technical and economic potential of the buildings. A comparison between the complex modelling implementation costs and cost-efficiency generated by optimisation will determine the commercial acceptability of the new concept for buildings of different uses. A market analysis will show whether architects and investors could accept the process for use. An analysis of potential technology risks and cost of their removal will determine elements which can ensure better quality of the process and its applicability. The process has not yet been developed and placed on the Croatian and EU market. Due to its innovative approach, it is necessary to analyse the application of a scientific method in order to achieve successful comprehensive optimisation, as well as to analyse the market acceptability of the process in different projects.
